GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Hulcherama camera uses standard 120 or 220 roll film. It provides
a 360
degree picture. The negative or transparency
is approximately 2.25" wide and 9" long for 360 degrees with a 35mm lens.
The camera uses M645 Mamiya, Pentax and the Hasselblad lenses which are
focusable from 3 feet to infinity. The camera is powered by a 12
volt, lead dioxide, sealed, 1 ampere hour, rechargeable-battery.
The camera is mounted on a tripod. It is started by pressing a remote-type
switch mounted in the stationary base of the camera. The camera then
rotates for 360 degrees and automatically stops, or it may be switched
to manual operation for less than 360 degrees or if necessary more than
360 degrees. The rate of rotation may be varied from 1 second to
144 seconds per revolution. The film is exposed through an adjustable
slit controlled from the outside of the camera. A wide range of effective
shutter speeds are provided from 1/500 to 1 second. The overall size
of the camera is 6 1/2" long, 5 1/4" deep, and 5 1/4" high. The complete
camera weighs approximately 5 lbs.
Film loading is relatively
simple and very much like the Rollei or Hasselblad. Film may be loaded
in daylight and unloaded in daylight after the complete roll is used.
Vertical angle covered by the camera with a 35mm lens is approximately
79 degrees. Rotational speeds of the camera are controlled by solid
state electronics. Speeds are set by means of a 6 position switch
on the outside of the camera.
The unique instrument, completely
designed and manufactured by the Charles A. Hulcher Company, Inc. In Hampton,
Virginia, is already providing exciting new types of photography and is
expected to find widespread use in panoramic photography within small rooms,
automobiles, airplanes, boats, board meetings, group shots, as well as
excellent outdoor panoramic photography day or night.
The Hulcherama enables photographers
to stand at a given point and capture a full image of anything and everything
visible to them from all sides.
With the Hulcherama and a
35mm lens, a full 360 degree picture can be exposed on a 9 inch segment
of film, three of which can be obtained on one roll of 120 film.
Confusing as it may appear, one such 9 inch contact print contains everything
the eye could see from the location at which the camera was rotated 360
degrees. Consequently, whatever appears in the furthest right-hand
section of the print also appears again at the furthest left-hand side.
The Hulcherama can be set
up on the tripod and rotated automatically for a 360 degree picture, or
it can be operated manually for shorter rotations. The rate of rotation
is controlled by a solid state electronic system, and may be varied from
1 second for a high speed turn to 144 seconds for a low speed turn.
Film progression within the camera is synchronized with camera movement
and the film is exposed through an adjustable slit, which is controlled
from outside the camera.
Although the Hulcherama has
no shutter speed as such, the combination of slit width and rotation speed
provide effective shutter settings. The camera has four slit widths
and 6 rotational speeds. Although the base price of the Hulcherama
includes 1 drive roller and 1 gear set, you may purchase additional sets
for a wide variety of lenses.
